Warren Winiarski is an icon in the wine world. Without him, Napa Valley might be a very different place.
Forty years ago, a British wine merchant named Steven Spurrier organized a tasting pitting the best of French wines against the best of California. The top white wine was a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and the top red wine was a 1973 Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon. The owner of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and maker of that Cab was Warren Winiarski.
I photographed him one day last September in preparation for all the events surrounding the anniversary celebrations taking place this year.
