Yesterday, I got to photograph the fourth annual TEDx Napa Valley event at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville. It's a great event full of inspiring speakers, lively discussion, and, of course, good wines. Each year has a different theme, and this year's was about redefining success.
This event has a unique set of challenges. The biggest is the harsh light spotlighted on the speaker. It's very bright and comes from a high position. This creates those harsh shadows in the eyes that makes people look like raccoons. Not much I can do about that. The next biggest challenge is photographing people while speaking. People invariably make funny faces at any given 1/250th of a second. I try to time the shots while people are not talking, but that doesn't always work. Sometimes, you just have to take a bunch and hope that at least one turns out.
After about eight hours of shooting almost a 1000 images from three cameras, I came home and delivered a little over 400 edited photographs to the TEDx team. And done.
