Sea Smoke Cellars

There’s a moment in your photography career that makes you feel like you could actually do this.

 I just had that moment.

I was hired by the premiere Pinot Noir winery in California to make the photographs for their new website.  The site hadn’t been updated since 2002, so it was undoubtedly time.

They saw my portfolio and liked my images.  The winemaker/GM asked me to come down to the winery for a tour of the vineyards and a face-to-face chat about their requirements.  They not only make some of the most heralded Pinot Noirs in the world, they are also just about the nicest bunch of people I’ve ever met.  I am honored to have been chosen.

What was odd was that no one ever asked about my rate or how much I’d charge.  They wanted me to photograph their vineyards.  Price wasn’t ever discussed.  I was told to send an invoice and that was the only time money was mentioned.

Time will tell if this job is a turning point.  Even if it’s not, I’m still proud to have been selected.
